Coach, therapist or psychologist? How to choose.
Anyone can call themselves a coach. A licensed psychologist who coaches brings doctoral training and clinical experience to goals and decisions. Here's how the options differ.
A coach
Coaching focuses on goals, decisions and action. The title isn't regulated, so training varies widely. A good coach is practical and keeps you accountable.
A therapist
Therapy treats mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression. It's the right choice when symptoms are getting in the way of your life. Therapists are licensed by the state.
A licensed psychologist who coaches
You get coaching's focus on goals and action, plus doctoral training in how people think, feel and decide. I'm a licensed psychologist with more than 20 years of experience, and I've worked in neuropsychology at UCLA. In coaching I don't diagnose or treat. But I can recognize when something needs a different kind of help, and I'll say so.
Why not an AI tool?
AI is useful for brainstorming. But it tends to agree with you, it can't tell when you're avoiding the real issue, and it won't notice if you never follow through.
Hi, I'm Dr. Jennifer.
I'm Dr. Jennifer Johnston-Jones, a California-licensed psychologist for more than 20 years. I did my undergraduate training at the University of Oregon and earned my PhD at the California School of Professional Psychology, an APA-accredited program. I've held clinical positions at the UCLA Neuropsychological Institute, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, St. John's Hospital and Children's Hospital Los Angeles, among others. My clients include an Academy Award-winning actress, an Olympic gold medalist, professional athletes and executives of large corporations.
